Nutella in Puff Pastry Hearts with Fresh Sliced Strawberries | URBAN BAKES

Below are step-by-step images on the process of making puff pastry hearts. The captions below each image is a shortened description of the steps. For full recipe instructions, see the recipe card towards the end of this post. Note that you can make this dessert with Nutella (hazelnut spread) baked within the puff pastry, as seen in the third image, or spread it on after with sliced strawberries.

Personally, I prefer Nutella added to the puff pastry AFTER it’s baked. It’s cleaner, easier to handle the pastry and the Nutella doesn’t lose its signature silky texture as opposed to when it’s baked, it becomes slightly “drier.” Plus, you can add fresh sliced strawberries elevating this treat even further!

If you make this recipe using the alternative method of adding hazelnut spread after the pastry has baked, and you use asymmetrical cookie cutters, flip the cookie cutter to make one heart mirror-imaged. This is done to ensure when the hearts are sandwiched, they align together.

Description

Quick and effortless Puff Pastry Hearts filled with Nutella hazelnut spread and fresh strawberries. Every bite is flaky, buttery and irresistibly delicious! Perfect easy treat for someone special or just because.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/3 cup (40 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 to 2 pastry sheets
  • 1/2 cup (148 grams) Nutella or hazelnut spread
  • 1 large egg (50 grams), mixed
  • coarse sugar (optional)
  • 6 to 12 strawberries, sliced (optional)

EQUIPMENT

Baking sheet

Silicone baking mat

Angled spatula

Heart shaped cookie cutters and Double Heart cookie cutter

Pastry brush

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 400°F (205°C). Line a large baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper; set aside.
  2. Unfold the pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, gently roll pastry to remove any creases from the folds.
  3. Using an angled spatula, spread Nutella over half of the pastry sheet from one edge to the other. Fold the empty side of the pastry sheet over the Nutella covered area.
  4. Use 1 to 3 inch (2.5 to 7.6 cm) heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out hearts of Nutella-filled pastry. Place the hearts 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) apart from each other over the prepared baking sheet. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush coat each heart with egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  5. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until pastries are puffed and golden brown. During baking the top pastry may slide or tilt more to one side. This can be slightly adjusted immediately after removing pastries from the oven however, use caution as the pastries will be very hot.  Allow pastry hearts to cool to room temperature before serving.

Notes

  • Best made and consumed within the same day.
  • A box of frozen puff pastry contains two sheets. Though this recipe uses one sheet, you can use the second sheet to make more Nutella-filled puff pastry hearts or freeze for later use.
  • An alternative method in making Nutella puff pastry hearts: bake puff pastry hearts (without Nutella). After the pastries have baked and cooled, spread Nutella and top with sliced strawberries. Use a second pastry heart to sandwich together.
