Juicy fresh plums rests beneath a spiced and buttery almond oat crisp. Add a touch of honey for an added sweet charm and serve warm with a scoop of ice cream for the ultimate experience of one of summer’s easiest desserts to make!

Coming to the tail end of summer, these precious plums will soon be out of season. Maybe it’s just me but I feel they don’t get enough attention in desserts compared to other stone fruits such as cherries and peaches. To make up for that lack, I’ve made an easy plum crisp that’s ready to dig in, in an hour. Super simple! Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and be amazed by how deliciously sweet this fruity dessert comes to life with a spiced crunchy almond oat crisp.

Plums pair well with aromatic spices such as ginger and cardamom and adding nuts can further add a desirable flavor. Keeping this in mind, I spiced this plum crisp perfectly with cardamom, cinnamon and a touch of nutmeg. As the crisp is pulled from the oven, you’re delighted with a soft cinnamon-floral fragrance. And from the first bite, there’s a sense of warmth like sipping a cup of hot chai. Personally, the aroma and flavor of the crisp oddly reminds me of the spices you experience around holidays.
How to Make a Plum Crisp
For best results, use ripe but firm fresh plums. If using soft or over ripened plums, there is a risk of the fruit becoming mushy upon baking. Note that when this recipe was initially tested, I had plums with a red flesh which are preferred over the white or lighter-fleshed plums. In several attempts to obtain the same plums, I was not fortunate to get them again (therefore, some images show the lighter plums). Red fleshed plums tend to be sweeter whereas the lighter fleshed plums are more tart. Use plums according to your preference – sweet vs tart.
Below are a few images with a short description of varying steps on the process of making a plum crisp. Use these images as a helpful guide when making your own. For detailed instructions, see the recipe card toward the bottom of this post.

The almond oat crisp provides a pleasant texture to the softened plums. It’s not ‘crunchy‘ per se, but has a good bite given that sliced almonds and oats are added. Plus, there are chunks of buttered brown sugar goodness that when bitten into, a pop of buttery, sweet and spiced flavor arises that tastes delicious with the fruity plums.
And for those who need a gluten free dessert, you can enjoy this too. Rather than using all-purpose flour to make the crisp, almond flour was used to expand on its subtle almond flavor.

For a touch of added sweetness, drizzle raw honey over the crisp and ice cream. For a similar crisp recipe, come see this apple version using caramel as its sweet drizzle.

Juicy fresh plums rests beneath a spiced and buttery almond oat crisp. Add a touch of honey for an added sweet charm and serve warm with a scoop of ice cream for the ultimate experience of one of summer’s easiest desserts to make!
Ingredients
PLUM CRISP
- 10 to 15 plums (2 pounds or 907 grams)
- 3/4 cup (165 grams) brown sugar
- 1/2 cup (60 grams) almond flour
- 1/3 cup (30 grams) old-fashioned or quick oats
- 1/4 (28 grams) sliced almonds
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 6 tablespoons (85 grams) unsalted butter, sliced or cubed
OTHER
- raw honey
- vanilla ice cream
EQUIPMENT
Instructions
- Heat oven to 375°F (190°C). Using cooking spray, grease bottom and sides of an 8 inch (20 cm) baking dish that is 2 inches (5 cm) deep; set aside.
- Slice each plum to 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) thick, removing the pit. Place slices into the prepared baking dish filled to the rim; set aside.
- In a medium bowl, mix brown sugar, flour, oats, almonds, cardamom, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cut in butter using a pastry blender or a long-tined fork until the mixture becomes crumbly. The crisp mixture should resemble wet sand. Evenly sprinkle over the sliced plums. The height of the unbaked dessert will be higher than the rim of the baking dish however, upon baking, the height will decrease as plums shrink in thickness.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until crisp is light brown and plums are tender. Allow the crisp to cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes.
- Drizzle honey over the crisp and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. ENJOY!
